General admission dress code

Whilst race goers are encouraged to wear smart clothing, no formal dress code applies except that bare tops are not permitted at any time.

The restricted areas

There are certain areas of the Ascot race course during Royal Ascot week, when a strict dress code Royal Ascot is enforced. There is no point in trying to side step the rules as they will be strictly enforced whoever you are !

Generally, ladies are required to wear formal day dress and a hat that covers the crown of the head. Shoulders and midriff must be covered.
Dresses and skirts shouldn't be more than two inches above the knee. Trouser suits should be of full-length and of matching material.
Gentlemen must wear either black or grey morning dress, including a waistcoat, with a top hat. For men, white or brown shoes are frowned upon.

Top hats are the order of the day - in the late 19th century, Lord Harris arrived at Ascot wearing a bowler. King Edward VIII took one look at him and asked loudly, "Goin' rattin', 'Arris?"

Military dress may be worn as approved dress code. Overseas visitors may wear the formal national dress of their country.
