The background to the emerging fashions of the past, the Gold Cup race with some winners, dress code, and pictures of Royal Ascot hats. The Royal Ascot Ladies day is something that shouldn't be missed!
 |
Ladies Day at Royal Ascot is 22nd June 2006
The Gold Cup meeting, or "Royal Ascot Ladies Day" as it is famously known, is a great day at the races and one not to be
missed. Focus switches from racing to fashion, in particular ladies and their hats!
There is no enforceable dress code for Ladies day, but nearly everyone dresses up and it is traditional that
ladies wear their summer dresses with special hats, whilst men would normally wear a suit or blazer.
It is a time to show off and the focus is more on the hats than on the horse racing, although the Gold
Cup provides the main feature.

Some background to the emerging fashions of the past
It was at around the time of the first running of the Gold Cup that the roots of today's traditional Royal Enclosure
dress code emerged. Beau Brummell, a close friend of the Prince Regent, decreed that men of elegance should wear
waisted black coats and white cravats with pantaloons.
Over the years, this has evolved into the wearing of morning
suits and equally "respectable" clothes for Ladies, who must wear hats on Royal Ascot Ladies Day. Although this is the rule in the Royal enclosures, it is
not so throughout the rest of the course. But most ladies take the chance to show off their plumage anyway and it becomes a wonderful
and often spectacular occasion.
Although the Royal Stand dates back to the 1790s, The Royal Enclosure as it is now, was born in 1845
when King George IV commissioned a two storey stand to be built with a surrounding lawn. Access was by invitation
of the King and here he entertained his friends in style. This general entertainment and over indulgence continues
to the present day especially on Royal Ascot Ladies Day.
